Buying guide · Choosing an installer
Choose an installer who plans for the handover, too.
Compare lighting installers on the written scope, equipment, relevant completed work, maintenance responsibilities and the experience you will have after handover. Ask for a demonstration of the controls and a clear support process. A good-looking proposal should also explain ownership, access and ongoing costs.
Describe the property and the result you want
Start with the areas you want to use or highlight: paths, trees, patio, roofline or seasonal decorations. Explain whether the lighting is for everyday use, holidays or both, and whether different areas should have independent settings.
Ask the installer to explain the fixture and controller choices. Request examples of their relevant completed work, including how installations look during the day. Obtain permission before sharing photos of other people’s homes.
Ask for a scope you can compare
A useful proposal identifies what equipment is included, where it will go and who is responsible for the work and ongoing service. Ask which requirements apply to the installation and who will handle any needed approvals.
- Which fixtures, controller models and firmware will be used?
- Who owns the hardware, accounts and saved settings?
- What installation, removal or storage work is included?
- What maintenance, warranty and recurring charges are in writing?
- What happens when a component fails or the installer is unavailable?
Make the control demonstration part of your decision
Ask to change a color, recall a saved look and review a schedule. Check whether the interface remains usable on your phone. If there are several controlled areas, have the installer demonstrate how you select the right one.
Ask what happens during a connectivity problem and how you can tell whether a change reached the lights. An interface preview and an online status indicator answer different questions. A practical demonstration makes those differences clear.
Leave with a small handover checklist
Before the job is finished, confirm access with your own account, the names of the controlled areas, the property’s time zone and the agreed everyday schedule. Keep the equipment details and support contact somewhere you can find them.
Unity supports this handover for compatible installations through a homeowner workspace, saved presets, schedules, property access and in-app support tickets. Installer portfolio tools help professionals find the right property when support is needed.
Common questions
Does Unity provide a list of local Christmas light installers?
This site does not currently publish a verified installer directory. Use these questions when evaluating local providers, and confirm that any proposed Unity setup uses supported hardware and firmware.
What should I ask before buying a smart lighting system?
Ask for the exact equipment, a live control demonstration, the account and access arrangements, network requirements, maintenance terms and all recurring charges in writing.
